What is an Artisan Contractor and what do they have to do with art? Well, the short answer is a worker with a skilled trade - usually involving making things by hand, and nothing in particular.

Artisan contractors may work under a general contractor in large scale construction projects - like a new residential subdivision, or they may work on smaller projects - specializing in renovating or remodeling.

Artisan contractors work in many trades - plumbing, electrical , landscaping, HVAC. They may do roofing, drywall, tile work. Most Artisan Contractors need and have General Liability insurance, but many need further insurance services, such as an Inland Marine policy to protect their tools, workers compensation if they have employees, and even commercial auto.

As far as insurance companies go - there is no standard definition of an Artisan Contractor. Companies define them based on the operations: number of employees, the Artisan contractors role, income, and size and scope of projects.

However they are defined, it is important for Artisan Contractors to work closely with an insurance professional to make sure they have the insurance protection they need to cover their operations, tools and equipment and liability exposure.

If you are a licensed tradesperson , plumber, electrician, landscaper, HVAC specialist, roofer, drywall, tile, painter or carpenter, you will want to talk with an insurance agent that specializes in this.  Do not trust this to  "cookie-cutter" policy.  You may be losing valuable coverage.  If you are required to have insurance, there is a reason for that to protect the person you are working for with funds that will be there if you provide the proper insurance.
